Richard Frank Saunders, Jr. (1934-2008) was the son of Frank Saunders, Sr., & Mrs. Mollie Lanier Saunders. He lived almost his entire life in the Portal community, Bulloch County, Georgia, on Saunders Road. He taught History at Georgia Southern (of which he was an alumnus, 1957) from 1969 to 1996, after several teaching jobs at lower-level schools, including Portal High. He received his doctorate from the University of Georgia in 1970, with a dissertation on the history of the Society of the Cincinnati, the oldest patriotic society in the United States. In research and writing, he often collaborated with his former teacher and mentor, Dr. George A. Rogers, most notably in the articles on the history of South Georgia, especially Liberty County, which were collected in the volume Swamp Water and Wiregrass: Historical Sketches of Coastal Georgia (1984). He was active in many local projects such as the Bulloch County Bicentennial and the Portal Centennial. He died December 23, 2008, aged 74.
