Thoman O'Gorman was a professor of church history and the Chair of the Ecclesiastical History department at the Catholic University of America from 1890 to 1896. In 1896, he was appointed Bishop of Sioux Falls, North Dakota. A position he held from 1896 to 1920. He also served as one of the commissioners on the Philipines Claims Commission sent to the Vatican by President Roosevelt in 1902 to arrange the purchase of landed estates held by Catholic religious orders resident in the Philippines before the islands came into U.S. hands.
