Joseph Grant Knapp received his Ph. D (1929) from Stanford University and in 1934, he was named the principal agricultural economist with the Farm Credit Administration. He published a two-volume account of the history of the cooperative movement in the United States: The Rise of American cooperative enterprise, 1620-1920 (1969) and The Advance of American cooperative enterprise, 1920-1945 (1973). He also authored other publications and was awarded honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Nebraska and North Carolina State University.

Joseph G. Knapp served as Administrator of the Farmer Cooperative Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1953 to 1966. He authored several books, including THE RISE OF AMERICAN COOPERATIVE ENTERPRISE, 1969, and THE ADVANCE OF AMERICAN COOPERATIVE ENTERPRISE: 1920-1945, 1973. He died in 1983.
