Served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II, class of 43-W-4. Trained at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Tex. and served at Love Field, Dallas, Tex. and at Victorville Army Air Base, Victorville, Calif. until WASP deactivation, Dec. 20, 1944. Later, Karkau taught math and flight theory at Brazilian Airforce School in São Paulo, Brazil. Successful breeder of champion Great Danes.
