The Medical College of South Carolina was chartered in 1823 and became the nation's tenth medical school when it enrolled its first class in 1824. The college was owned and operated by the Medical Society of South Carolina. The head of the school was the dean, who later managed the other schools which operated under the umbrella of the Medical College. The dean was responsible for all matters pertaining to the curriculum, faculty, students, finances, and acted as the de-facto head of central administration until 1949 when the position of president was created. The office of the dean created records those pertaining to student and financial matters.
