Resident of Marlboro, Vt.; grandson of William H. Porter (1861-1926). William H. Porter was born and spent early years in Middlebury, Vt.; at 17 or 18 he went to New York City and learned the banking business working for the Fifth Avenue Bank first; in 1886 he became cashier and eventually vice-president of Chase National Bank, then in 1899 vice president of Chemical National Bank. In 1911 he became partner in the private banking firm of J.P. Morgan and Co. Porter Hospital in Middlebury is named for his parents. He married Esther Jackson in 1887 and had two children, James, who was killed in service during World War I and Helen, whose son compiled the scrapbooks from material in his possession.
