Hide Profile

Fair Hill Burial Ground was established on land bequeathed by George Fox in 1690 to Friends in Philadelphia, including six acres for a meeting house, school house, and burial place. There were only a few interments from 1707 to 1795, when burials ceased temporarily because the land was leased to a tenant farmer. In 1818 the Fair Hill property was assigned to Green Street Monthly Meeting. In 1830 it was proposed that a burial ground be established there for the three Hicksite monthly meetings in Philadelphia: Green Street, Spruce Street, and Philadelphia. The burial ground was initally under the care of a joint committee. In 1985, the property was sold to Ephesians Baptist Church; in 1993, Fair Hill Burial Ground was incorporated and the property was purchased back by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting.
