The Volunteer Council was originally chartered November 14, 1956. Its charter lapsed September 1, 1965, but was reinstated February 23, 1968. The Volunteer Council was formed to explore and develop areas for volunteer services at the Austin State School; to recommend volunteer projects and programs for individuals, groups, and organizations; to assist as an advisory group in setting up policies and standards governing functions and operations of volunteer services in the Austin State School; to act as a coordinating agency for voluntary projects and programs at the school; to interpret the needs of the students; and to disseminate information regarding the Austin State School to interested groups and individuals. Membership of the council consisted of a representative and an alternate from organizations and groups, and/or individuals interested in volunteer services at the Austin State School. Membership on the council was by invitation of the council, subject to a majority vote of the members present. In 1982, the Volunteer Council for the Austin State School became known as the Volunteer Services Council for the Austin State School.
