Emigrated to California (1874), married Frances Rebecca Tretheway (1876). Became grocer in San Jose (1876), naturalized (1882). Active in Prohibitionist Party. Ran for Mayor of San Jose, nominated John Bidwell for Governor at state convention (1888). Studied law and became attorney (1890s). Ran for Governor on Prohibitionist ticket (1896).
