Port Wentworth Corporation.

The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.

(Cont.) The Port Wentworth Corporation was incorporated on January 15, 1934 and purchased 2,500 acres of land containing railroad tracks, rights of way, and other property from the Port Wentworth Company of Massachusetts, to provide suitable industrial terminal advantages for the railroad in the Port Wentworth area.

(Cont.) On December 21, 1936, a plan of reorganization was enacted whereby the Port Wentworth Corporation was consolidated with Piedmont Associates, Inc., a Delaware based company, rataining the name of the Port Wentworth Corporation.

(Cont.) By 1953, the Central of Georgia Railway Company, through its ownership of the Empire Land Company, gained controlling interest in the capital stock of the Port Wentworth Corporation. On July 2, 1969, the Port Wentworth Corporation, the Midland Properties Company, and the Empire Land Company were formally consolidated under the name of the Empire Land Company.
