Margherita Cogni, "La Fornarina," a Venetian baker's wife with whom Lord Byron had an affair from around the time he first met her in August of 1817, until sometime in 1819. According to Byron in an 1819 letter to John Murray, upon his last intentional meeting with Cogni she cut his thumb with a knife in a violent fit, then threw herself in the canal. Cogni was illiterate; her letters to Byron were dictated to a professional scribe.
