Florida State Turnpike Authority

Hide Profile

The Florida State Turnpike Authority was created in 1953 (Ch. 28128, Laws) to construct, operate, and maintain the Sunshine State Parkway between Dade and Duval counties. The Authority consisted of five members, one of whom was a member of the State Road Dept. The 1953 Legislature limited construction of the turnpike to 110 miles north from a point in Dade County. Subsequent legislatures authorized various other routes. The Turnpike Authority was merged into the Dept. of Transportation in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws) with the Department taking responsibility for the maintenance of the turnpike and its facilities.
