Charles Calvert Elkins was born in Lillie, La. November 19, 1900. In the early 1920s, Elkins began his career in education as an elementary school teacher, later serving in various other capacities including junior high and high school principal at Manifest, La., superintendent of schools for Catahoula Parish, and director of testing and guidance at LSU. Elkins also served as dean at Francis T. Nicholls Junior College upon its opening in 1948 and became president after its elevation in status to a four-year college. Elkins received numerous honors including memberships in various organizations, honorary citizenships for several La. cities, and having a specific calendar day designated as "Charles C. Elkins Day" by two local cities.
