Major General (MG) James G. Browder, Jr., was born and raised in Brunswick County, Virginia. He was commissioned into the United States (U.S.) Army on 13 June 1966 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). In November 1967, Browder went to the U.S. Army Engineer School. He was stationed in Italy from February 1968 to October 1969 with the Troop Operations Branch, G4 Division, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force and then was reassigned within the Task Force to the 62d Engineer Company.
In October 1969, Browder went into the U.S. Army Reserves and served multiple assignments with the 80th Division. From July 1992 to May 1997, he was Assistant Division Commander of the 80th Division, and starting in May 1997, he served as the Division Commander. During his career, Browder attended the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. Browder retired 14 May 2001.
