Lemmon, J. G. (John Gill), 1832-1908
Variant namesJohn Gill Lemmon, a California botanist. A native of Lima, Michigan, Lemmon enlisted as prrivate of Co. 2 of the 4th Regiment of Michigan Cavalry on Aug. 9, 1862. With his regiment, he left for Kentucky and Tennesssee. He spent the year 1863 and the winter of 1864 a military hospital at Nashville, detailed as a nurse. In March 1864, Lemmon rejoined his regiment, in time for Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. In August 1864, he was taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville; he was released in 1865. After the war, Lemmon moved to California. In 1880, he married Sara Allen Plummer. In 1888, the Lemmons were appointed to the California State Board of Forestry, Lemmon as a botanist, and his wife, an artist, the positions they held until 1892.
