Chicago Public School teacher Mary Garramone (1905-1993) was born, raised, and worked on the Near West Side of Chicago. Garramone attended Jackson Elementary School and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1922. She received a teaching certificate from Chicago Teacher's College and in 1944 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Loyola University. Garramone taught for 35 years at the Riis Elementary School from the 1920s to the 1950s and for 10 years at McLaren Elementary School in the 1960s. She was active in community affairs and served as community representative for the Chicago Committee on Urban Opportunity. Garramone retired in 1972 and was honored with a plaque by the Near West Side Community Committee for her years of teaching in the community.
