Mary Lourie Mattoon (d. 1885), Stephen's wife, taught English and took Siamese girls and young women into her home, instructing and training them as Christians. She returned to the United States in 1864, two years before her husband, because of ill health. The Matoons had three children: Lourie (1850-1851), Mary Lourie (b. 1854) and Emma Williams (b. 1857) and also adopted a Siamese child, whom they christened Esther.
