Walter S. "Bud" Schoenberger was born in 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pa. and died in Orono, Maine in 1998. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He was a professor of political science, specializing in international relations at the University of Maine in Orono. He authored the book Decision of destiny, a political analysis of the decision to use the atomic bomb. He retired from the University of Maine in 1989 as professor emeritus having taught for 34 years. He was deeply involved in all levels of Maine politics.
