Charles McKean was educated at Bristol University. After working at national architectural institutions in Edinburgh and London he joined the Department of History at the University of Dundee in 1977. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1979, of the Royal Society in Edinburgh in 1998, and holds Honorary Fellowships of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He is founder and series editor of the RIAS/Landmark Trust series of illustrated architectural guides to Scotland. McKean's research and teaching interests focus on Scottish architecture within a European context and the built environment and its effect on society and culture.
