Clark Louis Ruffner (1903-1982) was a career Army officer whose service included numerous distinctions and decorations. He was born in Buffalo, New York and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Virginia Military Institute in 1924. He received his commission that year as an officer in the U.S. Army Cavalry. During his career, he taught military science and tactics at Norwich University as an Assistant Professor. He attended the Command and General Staff School in 1941. His wartime service included an appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff, VII Corps from 1942-1943, and Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Forces, Pacific Ocean Areas from 1944-1946. He later served as Chief of Staff, X Corps, during the Korean War, and as Commanding General of the 3rd Army from 1958-1960. He retired at the rank of General in October, 1962. His career distinctions included the Distinguished Service Cross, three Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star, and Commendation Ribbon.
