Paul Hodder-Williams was born in 1910. He was educated at Rugby School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1931, he joined the publishing firm Hodder & Stoughton Ltd. and was appointed director in 1937, later serving as chairman from 1961 until 1975. During the Second World War, he served with an artillery company and the London Welsh heavy anti-aircraft regiment and was awarded the OBE in 1945.
