Alexander Rush, Philadelphia gastroenterologist and great-great-grandson of physician Benjamin Rush, was born on 29 Oct. 1910. He married Carol Smith in 1945. Rush died on 24 Oct. 1983.

Rush received a B.A. from Princeton University, 1932, and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, 1936. He joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in 1941, becoming Assistant Professor in Medicine, Associate in Gastroenterology, and Associate Professor in Clinical Medicine. In 1939, Rush joined the staff of Pennsylvania Hospital, was chief of the Department of Gastroenterology, 1955-1974, and gastroenterologist to its Benjamin Franklin Clinic. Alexander Rush was elected to fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1947.
