James Harriman Jandl, 1925-, BS, 1945, Franklin and Marshall College; MD, 1949, Harvard Medical School, was appointed Research Fellow at the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory at Boston City Hospital in 1952 and became Director of the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory and the Harvard Medical Unit at Boston City Hospital and the Head of the Department of Medicine at Boston City Hospital from 1968 to 1970. Jandl was named Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1955 and George Richards Minot Professor of Medicine in 1968; he became emeritus in 1999. Jandl's research focused on blood disorders, hemoglobin molecules, and blood platelets, and he is credited with the discovery of the mechanism by which the reticuloendothelial system in humans is able to bind and destroy red cells coated with gamma globulin antibodies.
