During the early years of its existence, aside from a small Law School, Indiana University consisted solely of a College of Liberal Arts. Name changed to College of Arts and Sciences in 1921.

Horace Hoffman, professor of Greek, served as the first Dean of the College 1894-1920 and also served as vice president 1919-1920.
