Flanagan, Barbara (American journalist, contemporary)
Variant namesJournalist, writer, and community activist. Barbara Flanagan was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and attended Drake University in the early 1940s as a drama major. In 1954 she moved to Minneapolis where she worked in the promotion department of the Minneapolis times. Later assignments included general reporter, women's editor, and finally columnist for the Minneapolis star and tribune newspapers. In this position.
She was able, over a period of 23 years, to speak out on social issues, particularly on urban renewal and preservation of historic buildings in Minneapolis. Flanagan's book, Minneapolis, describing the city's cultural, social, and environmental highlights was published in 1973 and in 1977 she wrote the photo documentary history of the Minnesota Orchestra which was issued with the record album, Ovation, on the occasion of the orchestra's 75th anniversary.
