Stephen Arthur Axtens was born in Garden City, Kan. on June 4, 1895. He attended the Agricultural College of Colo. in Fort Collins (1913-1916), but graduated in 1918 from Colo. State Teachers College in Greeley. Axtens received his Colo. architect's license in 1924 and worked in Colo. and Calif. before returning to Denver to establish his own architectural and engineering design practice in 1927. During World War II, he worked as a structural consultant for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before returning to private practice in 1944. Axtens designed a variety of building types throughout his career, but is probably best known for various buildings at Colorado Women's College (1936, 1941, 1945, 1955, 1958) and the former National Farmer's Union Building (1952-1954) at 1575 Sherman Street in Denver. He continued his architectural practice until well into his 70s and died in Denver, Colo. in April 1976.
