William H. Bayley came to JPL in 1960 as Deputy Chief or the Telecommunications Division. In 1963 he was named General Manager of the Deep Space Network (DSN) and in November of 1967 he was appointed Assistant Laboratory Director (ALD) for Tracking and Data Acquisition. He was responsible for international site selection and construction of facilities as the DSN grew from three stations to eleven. In 1980 he retired and Dr. Peter T. Lyman was appointed ALD. Pete Lyman came to JPL in 1963 a mechanical engineer on the Mariner Mars '64 project team. He was the ALD from 1980-1987 when he was appointed Deputy Director. He held this position until his retirement in 1992.
