Southern Baptist minister and denominational leader. Merritt served as President of the Southern Baptist Convention from 2000-2002. In 1974, he received his Bachelor₂s degree (Cum Laude) in Accounting from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. In 1978, Merritt earned a Masters of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and in 1982, received his Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Evangelism from SBTS as well.
