Organized in Charleston in 1785 as the South-Carolina Society for Promoting and Improving Agricultural, and Other Rural Concerns, the society was incorporated in 1795 as the Agricultural Society of South Carolina (a name which was still in use in 1920). Members of the Society were aristocratic plantation owners from the Charleston District.
