Weaver, fiber artist; San Pedro, Calif.

An influential fiber art teacher, James Bassler is Professor Emeritus at UCLA, where he taught from 1975 to 2000. He also established the fiber/textile program at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Smithville, Tenn. (1980-1982), and was part of the recurrent summer faculty at Penland School of Crafts in Penland, N.C., and Arrowmont School for the Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. He also lives in Oaxaca, Mexico. His weavings draw inspiration from pre-Columbian, Andean, and Mexican textile traditions.
