Public Act 188 of 1891 created a commission known as The World's Fair Managers. It consisted of 6 members, 2 of whom were to be women, and the governor as an exofficio member. The purpose of the Managers was to prepare an exhibit of various manufactures and products of Michigan at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The Michigan Building was designed by Mortimer L. Smith of Detroit. Exhibits were planned concerning Michigan agriculture, minerals, forests and forest products, education, fisheries, and women's work. The Managers formulated rules for the management of the Michigan Building, hired staff, and made all financial arrangements concerned with Michigan's role in the Exposition. They also arranged the dismantling of the Building and the distribution of the exhibits. They ceased operations in early 1894.
