Clare Grundman (1913-1996), an Ohio native, earned two music degrees from OSU (B.S.M.E., 1934; M.A., 1940). Following his studies, and with teaching experience at all levels, he moved to New York City where he was a successful composer, arranger, orchestrator, and conductor for radio and television shows, films, theater, and ballet. Many of his works were published by Boosey and Hawkes. Noted especially for his band compositions, he was elected to ASCAP and to the American Bandmasters Association and received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the American Bandmasters Association's Edwin Franko Goldman Citation (1983), and the OSU School of Music's Alumni Award (1993). In addition to his musical activity, he co-authored The New York Times Crossword Puzzle Dictionary (with Tom Pulliam, 1974, etc.).
