G.C. Murphy Company.
The first G.C. Murphy discount variety store appeared in McKeesport , Pennsylvania in 1906. By 1911, George Clinton Murphy had twelve stores in the southwest Pennsylvania region with sales over $250,000. Expansion continued throughtout the tri-state region and, by 1960, all over the country as a result of an aggressive acquisition policy. The number of stores peaked in 1976 with 545. In 1985, Ames, a discount department store, bought the G.C. Murphy Company.
