Alpha Tau Omega was founded in 1865 at the Virginia Military Institute in Richmond, Virginia. E. P. Lyon and L. M. Huntington established the Gamma Nu Chapter in 1902 at the University of Minnesota. An Alumni Association was established in 1906.
Members of Gamma Nu moved into their first Chapter House located at 1111 Fourth Street S.E. in 1907. The house was sold in 1923 and a new Tudor style house, located at 1821 University Avenue S.E. was built the next year.
In 1994 the National Headquarters revoked Gamma Nu’s charter. Low membership and declining alumni support as well as a lawsuit brought against the chapter by a former employee in 1993, contributed to the closing of the chapter.
