The Faculty Hearings Committee was established in 1959 in accordance with the Board of Trustees' regulations on "Academic Freedom, Tenure, and Academic Due Process," which required each campus of the Consolidated University to establish a standing committee of the faculty to hear appeals under the regulations. As of 2007, it remained a standing committee of the Faculty Council, charged with performing functions assigned to it in the Trustee Policies and Regulations Governing Academic Tenure.
