William Congress Hibbs was born in Ohio on September 15, 1847, and lived near Rock Island, Illinois, throughout much of his childhood. He enlisted in Company I of the 14th Illinois Volunteer Regiment in 1863 and served throughout the remainder of the war. He moved to Iowa in 1875, and later lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He and his wife, Sarah B. Durr, had 8 children: William Evan, Edward, George, Orville, Robert, Elsie, Harry, and Ruth. He died in Cameron, Missouri.

Sherlock Hibbs was born in Marengo, Iowa, on February 28, 1904, the son of William Evan and Emma Stuhlmiller Hibbs, who lived in Battle Creek, Michigan. He worked in New York City after his graduation from the University of Missouri in 1926, and joined the United States Navy on February 16, 1942. During World War II, he fought in North Africa, Italy, France, and the Pacific Theater, and attained the rank of commander. He served on the personal staff of Admiral Calvin T. Durgin and in an intelligence unit. After the war, he returned to New York City, where he worked for the firm Kidder, Peabody & Company on Wall Street. He retired to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1974, and died there on July 5, 2002. His wife was Margaret Taylor Hibbs.
