William (Bill) Phillips, born June 12th 1936 in Flomaton, Alabama, began his YMCA career in 1958 as a youth work secretary in Pensacola, Florida. He served in the U.S. Army 1959-1961 as a psychiatric social worker at Brooke Army Hospital, San Antonio, Texas. Upon discharge from the service he returned to the Pensacola YMCA. Throughout the years he grew in esteem in the Florida Y movement when in 1976 he became the general director of the Central Florida YMCA. From Florida he went on to serve as the President and C.E.O. of the YMCA of Greater Seattle and as C.E.O. of the YMCA of the Greater Houston Area. Of note is the substantial growth in both the Seattle and Houston YMCAs under the leadership of Phillips. William Phillips retired in 2002.
