Maye, a teacher at Indianapolis Public School 87, initiated a Hall of Fame wall of school alumni in February 1968 to honor former students and spotlight careers uncommon in the black community. During the 14-year tenure of the program, honorees have included several doctors, an author, attorneys, a diplomat, and a Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
