Joshua Saxton Raynolds was born in Canton, Ohio to Madison and Sara Raynolds. Raynolds lived in Central City, Colorado before moving to New Mexico in 1876. In the same year he established the Central Bank of Las Vegas, with his brothers Jefferson and Frederick. The bank later became the First National Bank of Las Vegas and was one of the most important financial institutions in New Mexico at the time. In 1878, the brothers opened the Central Bank of Albuquerque in Old Town, and in 1881 purchased control of the First National Bank of Albuquerque. Joshua Raynolds served as president of the First National Bank of Albuquerque and the First National Bank of El Paso. In 1902, he became president of Occidental Life Insurance in Albuquerque, and from 1913 until his death in 1916 was president of the Raynolds Addition Company, an Albuquerque real estate development enterprise.

Herbert F. Raynolds, Joshua Raynolds's son, was born in Central City, Colorado in 1874. He graduated Harvard College in 1897 and Columbia Law School in 1902. In 1911, he was elected the first judge of the 2nd Judicial District of the state of New Mexico.
