The Alaska Native Association of Oregon was incorporated in 1971 as a nonprofit organization to promote Alaska Natives' pride and preservation of their heritage, customs, and folklore, to promote their economic and social well being, to discourage prejudice, and to promote good government. Membership consists of all persons of Eskimo, Indian, or Aleut extraction and their descendants. The organization participated with the Alaska Federation of Natives in a 1973 lawsuit against the Secretary of the Interior that led to the establishment of the thirteenth regional corporation for Alaska under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The secretary was directed to enroll eligible, nonresident Natives who chose the thirteenth region and to distribute monies from the Alaska Native Fund to those members.
