Seaton Grantland (1782-1864) was born in New Kent, Virginia, the son of Gideon and Sallie Bradford Gantland. In 1808, he moved to Milledgeville, Georgia. His brother, Fleming Grantland, soon followed and the two men established the Georgia Journal. After Fleming's death in 1819 at the age of 29, Seaton sold the paper. He then began the Southern Recorder, which he edited until 1833. He served two terms in the Georgia congress, 1835 and 1837. Seaton married Ann (Nancy) Tinsley and had three children: Fleming, Susan, and Anna V. After his wife's death in 1823, he remarried to Katherine Dabney. Grantland died at his home at Woodville, near Milledgeville (from Men of Mark in Georgia, II, p. 100-103).
