Richard T. May was born in New Hampshire in 1915. He completed four years of college and was working as a teacher when he enlisted in the Army on December 15, 1942 at Boston, Mass. He joined the 10th Mountain Division while it was engaged in mountain and winter warfare training at Camp Hale, Colo. He was assigned initially to the 90th Infantry Regiment. Later, May transferred to the 86th and then to the 87th Infantry Regiments. May engaged in combat operations against the German Army in Italy from January through May 1945, and he attained the rank of corporal.
