Sylvania Central Railway Company.
The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The Sylvania Railroad Company was incorporated on January 3, 1884. The line ran 15-miles from Rocky Ford, Georgia to Sylvania, Georgia and connected with Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. The line was completed in 1885; however, financial difficulties forced its foreclosure.
(Cont.) On May 2, 1903, the Company was purchased at a mortgage foreclosure sale and reorganized as the Sylvania Central Railway Company. The Central of Georgia Railway held the majority of its stock from around 1919 to 1953. In 1935, the Company was leased to the Sylvania Railway Company until it was finally abandoned in 1954.
