The Latin American Language and Area Center at the University of Florida was established in 1962 with funds from Title VI of the National Defense Education Act. The program was initially established as a unit separate from the Center for Latin American Studies. In 1968, the office was abolished and the administration of Title VI funds was transferred to the Center for Latin American Studies.
