Carpenter, a resident of Poughkeepsie, was elected District Attorney of Dutchess County, N.Y. in 1858. In 1871 he was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention, and the following year was temporary Chairman of the Republican State Convention. He was elected State Senator in 1875, County Judge in 1877, Chairman of Republican State Committee in 1882 and nominee for Lieutenant-Governor of New York that same year. In 1884 he was nominated for the position of Territorial Governor of Montana by President Arthur.
