Carolyn Anspacher was a journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, working as a member of its staff from 1933 until 1979. Her great-grandfather, Samuel Hirshberg, was an early Oakland Jewish settler, and her grandfather, David Hirshberg, was president of Temple Sinai and active in the community affairs of Oakland's Jewish community. Anspacher took part in theatrical performances during her student years, and she received positive reviews for her performance of Leah in the very successful production of "The Dybbuk", by S. An-Ski, that the Temple Players of San Francisco's Congregation Emanu-El performed (1928).
