Edsall was born in Salem, MA; lived on a farm in Concord, MA until the age of 15; graduated from Radcliffe in 1895; traveled in Europe; taught school in Philadelphia; married David Linn Edsall, a physician and biomedical researcher; had three sons; and died of pneumonia at the age of 45.
