Delta Queen Steamboat Company

The Delta Queen Steamboat began operating in 1927 in California. The Greene Line Steamers purchased the ship in 1946. In 1958 Richard C. Simonton, Edwin Quinby and Jack Quinby purchased controlling interest of the Delta Queen, but the Greene Line continued to operate the ship. Following the passage of the Safety of Life at Sea Law in 1966, which banned the use of wooden overnight passengerships, William Muster and Betty Blake led the "Save the Delta Queen" campaign for several years to get an exemption for the ship. The Greene Line was sold to Overseas National Airways in 1969. Then in 1973 the Greene Line changed its name to the Delta Queen Steamboat Company. The Mississippi Queen sailed its maiden voyage in 1976.
