Templeton enlisted on June 29, 1863 with Company D of the the 8th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry and served this unit in various capacities including orderly to Col. Joseph Dorr, provost guard, scout, mail carrier and teamster. He was captured near Noonan, Georgia on July 31, 1864 while participating in General E.M. McCook's campaigns to disable railroads. He was imprisoned at Andersonville until April 1, 1865. He finished his service at Benton Barracks, Missouri and mustered out on June 10, 1865.
