United States Department of State Office of Near Eastern and African Affairs
Variant namesThe Office of Near Eastern and African Affairs was established February 15, 1944. It included three divisions, the Division of Near Eastern Affairs, the Division of Middle Eastern Affairs, and the Division of African Affairs, with responsibilities regarding United States relations with such countries as Egypt; Greece; Iraq; Lebanon; Palestine and Trans-Jordan; Saudi Arabia and other countries of the Arabian Peninsula; Syria; Turkey; Afghanistan; Iran; India; Ceylon; Burma; Ethiopia, and Liberia.
Along with the other three geographic offices of the Department of State it was are responsible for the formulation of over-all United States policy, and coordination of its implementation, with regard to the the countries within its jurisdiction. The office was replaced by the Bureau of Near Eastern, South Asian and African Affairs October 3, 1949.
